While scanning some pages into the computer I clean up and tweak other pages already scanned. Most of the clean-up is basic stuff, such as erasing stray pencil lines or ink smears. Sometimes I tweak an aspect of the pencils through inks or later on the computer, where I can try different things to see which looks better while still having the original intended look that was done in pencil. Some tweaks take longer than others. I try to get feedback from friends and colleagues before considering a page complete.
I received a couple messages asking what I meant about tweaks, in my last post, so I’ll give you an example. Being the amateur perfectionist that I am, I went back and decided to tweak a couple areas of the cover I posted recently. The image on the left is the original and the image on the right shows a couple tweaks I made. I cleaned up my inking on the gun barrels and made them smoother. I made the female character’s head more round (Keren). I also made Keren’s gun a little thinner on the top two portions. My wife, Kristin, helped with the gun tweaks even. In your opinion, were the tweaks needed, or am I being too much of a perfectionist? As normal, just click on the image to see it larger.
